Hlne Lambert was appointed Director of the Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness at the University of Melbourne Law School on the 2nd of December 2024. She is Editor in Chief (with Laura van Waas) of the Statelessness and Citizenship Review and coordinates the annual Statelessness Intensive Course. She is also Professor of Law at the University of Melbourne Law School, teaching the MLM International Refugee Law LAWS70366. Prior to this appointment, Hlne was Professor of Law at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). She is a Senior Research Associate at the Refugee Law Initiative (London) and a member of the editorial board of the International Refugee Law Book Series (published by Martinus Nijhoff).

Hlne graduated from the University of Exeter with a PhD in Comparative Asylum Law, and from the University of Strasbourg with a Licence en Droit and a Matrise de Droit Public. She has published widely in the areas of asylum, refugees and migration; statelessness and issues of nationality; international law and international relations; and transnational law and comparative approaches to law. Her latest book International Refugee Law and the Protection of Stateless Persons co-authored with M Foster was published by Oxford University Press (2019). Her research has been supported by funding from the British Academy, the Nuffield Foundation and the Australian Research Council.

Hlne has acted as a consultant for UNHCR, the Council of Europe, and the European Commission on numerous occasions. She has advised the Governments of Moldova, Ukraine and Serbia-Montenegro on their draft asylum legislation, and trained officials on behalf of the Council of Europe and UNHCR in Poland, Slovenia, Moldova, Romania and Serbia-Montenegro. She has acted as a consultant for the Swedish Ministry of Justice and trained judges and legal advisors in the Swedish immigration courts and foreign office. She has worked as a Protection Officer for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a visiting fellow at the Refugee Studies Centre, University of Oxford, and a Dyason Fellow at the University of Melbourne, School of Law.
